W. Froude

Oil on Wood Panel

18" x 24"

W. Froude is a self-taught artist from Penetanguishene, Ontario, now based in East
Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. Working in oils, watercolour, and ink, he creates
landscapes, still life, and figurative works inspired by the Canadian landscape, everyday
objects, and his experience as a millwright at the Halifax Shipyard. His art balances
structure and spontaneity, with bold colour and expressive brushwork.

For Halifax: Looking Back, Moving Forward, Froude presents two paintings that reflect
the city’s shipbuilding legacy: “Launch of HMCS Margaree, 1956” and the “Launch of
HMCS Robert Hampton Gray, 2024”. By painting them side by side, Froude bridges the
historical and the contemporary, honoring both the evolving craft of shipbuilding and the
enduring spirit of the workers behind it—including himself.
