As both a performer and a visual artist I find myself fascinated by movement, and depictions of movement that capture the vivacity of their subjects. This series was created for my show ‘Marvelous Miscreants’ at the Anna Leonowens Gallery, which aimed to invite viewers into an appreciation for the artistry of circus. As audience members, a circus is somewhere to escape the mundane, to be inspired and awed. As performers, it is a traveling home made of people and wonder and shared stories. I collaborated with each performer to create costumes and record a routine of their creation. The ensuing paintings were an exercise both in distilling their performances into a handful of poses, and in letting go, as each new pose involved obscuring the one underneath.
