ARTIST GAIL SUTHERLAND

“I have always been drawn to the arts and the outdoors. My background is in
Commercial Art as well as Fine Art. I am familiar with most mediums, but am especially drawn to watercolour and chalk pastel. I find both mediums to be extremely versatile and often unpredictable. This keeps me present and open to creative possibilities that may present themselves as I paint and interpret my subject. My inspiration comes from the variety and natural beauty of the Maritimes and the close relationship people have with this environment. Art and the act of its creation have provided me with numerous gifts and insights, which have enriched my life immeasurably. My hope is that by sharing my work and passion, it will do the same for others.”

“ To simplify, to focus,
to balance the seen with the unseen,
to capture the spirit, heart & soul
the painting’s reason for being. ”

Gail Sutherland is originally from Montreal and has a Fine Arts degree from John Abbott College and completed her BFA at Concordia University, with a specialization in graphic design. Following University, Gail worked primarily as a graphic designer, eventually managing a small studio in Montreal which specialized in packaging and design for pharmaceutical companies. Gail moved to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with her husband in 1990. She was immediately inspired by the rugged beauty of the landscape that now surrounded her and began to paint professionally and exhibit locally. In 2011, Gail became an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour and in 2018 she was delighted to be featured in the prestigious International magazine, “The Art of Watercolour”. The article highlighted her painting process, the landscape of Nova Scotia, and her winning painting entitled “Tumble”, which won 3rd place national in the IWS Canada 150 online exhibition, “150 Ways to Celebrate”. Gail currently resides in Bedford, Nova Scotia and her work can be found in many private and corporate collections worldwide.
