ARTIST RON KUWAHARA

I preceded my artistic vocation with a rewarding career as a physicist. My artistic compulsion to draw and paint, led me to leave scientific life and to study at NSCAD University. I completed a BFA with a major in painting in 2011. My scientific background complements my artistic aspirations.

The wilderness regions of Nova Scotia appeal to both the scientist and artist in me.
As a physicist I am always highly respectful of the forces of nature. I am compelled to learn about the geophysical, biological and evolutionary processes that have interacted over eons to create the planet earth, the continents and the biodiversity of the world we live in. Visits to a nature preserve allow me to re-discover firsthand how balanced, complex and harmonious ecosystems have evolved without human or divine intervention. I am reminded that I am only one of many species entitled to life of this
planet. As an artist I see of the beauty and harmony of the natural world. Most living things are preoccupied with the necessities of life. How lucky we are to be sentient beings who can appreciate the grandeur of the forest, the sunrise over the ocean, or the colourful leaves of autumn. Such beauty, created by patterns of light and shadow, inspires my paintings. I mix and splash paint into abstracted colour patches that form recognizable images from afar. We Canadians often take the wildness for granted. I am grateful to be living in Nova Scotia where nature is close at hand. However, these nature areas are becoming scarcer as industry and urban development continually expand around our cities and communities. I appreciate all those citizens who are working to preserve Nova Scotia’s wilderness.
